Description

General information:
The Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department is known as a dynamic, varied and challenging profession. Otorhinolaryngology is the specialty that deals with disorders and diseases of the throat, nose and ears in patients of all ages. Less known is that the specialty is dealing with disorders of the neck and salivary glands, swallowing disorders, dizziness, allergies and communicative disorders. The University Audiology Centre Groningen is also part of the ENT department. Otorhinolaryngology has special focus on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors in the head and neck area. Other special interest are diseases of the skull and disorders in hearing, speaking and language usage.

Education and scientific research have high priority within the ENT department. Interns are supervised by staff with great enthusiasm. This manifests itself in a very pleasant and challenging environment.

Offers for students:
To find out whether you want to be an otorhinolaryngologist, the ENT surgery department offers the possibility of a small internship. For 2 weeks it is possible to orientate yourself as a student and study the ENT surgery.

In the first year of the master it is possible to follow an internship for 6 weeks in the  ENT surgery department. Classification is made at the education secretary of the department of surgery. During this internship you will be introduced to the clinic during office hours, on the ward and in the operating complex or day treatment center.

At the ENT surgery department the semi-doctor internship can be completed at the ward within 14 weeks. That means there will be no surgical skills gained. As semi-doctor, you will supervise patients on the ward under the supervision of the ward doctor and the hall supervisor. As semi-doctor you have to take care of some of the patients at the ward yourselve. Supervised by the doctors the semi-doctor will perform all the work around these patients. You can think of the inclusion of patients, presenting patients during attentions and during the visit, wound care, discharge letter and so on.

In the third year of the Master, or in some cases prior to the first internships, it is possible to follow a research internship for 20 weeks to a chosen aspect within the ENT surgery. The research can only be carried out on the basis of a pre-approved application, which the student will write in consultation with the supervisors.

If you want to do research next to your study there are multiple opportunities within the department ENT surgery.
