On this website you can find more information about internship abroad. The leading and most updated information can be found on Study Info.
Should you want to do your academic internship abroad, but you do not know where to do it, there are several ways to orient yourself to it and/or make it happen.
The starting point should be your substantive interest, and start searching from there. In short: you first ask yourself what you (approximately) want to do, and then where.
The most obvious (and successful) strategy is to use the connections of doctors/researchers at UMCG or affiliated hospitals. You probably already know some of them, and hopefully in the specialty in which you want to do your research. If not, your first task is to make contact with them.
To take an example, if you want to do research on some aspect of Parkinson's disease, you find out which neurologist knows more about it and to him or her you explain what your rough plans are and ask about good hospitals or universities to do it. The neurologist in question is almost always affiliated with an international network and knowledgeable about where you could conduct that research. He/she also knows colleagues there directly, and not infrequently is willing to introduce you to them.
Another option to inquire with students who have gone abroad before you. The International Office keeps records of these. You can also view internship reports through Study Info.
You can also check the announcements on the Student Portal. Under 'Nice to know' messages about academic internships abroad appear (in)regularly.
The faculty has a network of institutional partners, but these are especially important for clinical internships (M2 and M3). A cooperation agreement is not required for scientific internships. Research collaborations tend to be “theme-specific” and thus elude these broad partnerships. Research often involves individual contacts, determined by a shared interest. And so these contacts are best used for your scientific internship.
Does that have a chance of success? Certainly! Every year, 60-70 students succeed in doing their scientific internship abroad. Foreign supervisors know that the RUG has an excellent reputation, and when RUG medical students are also nominated by a colleague, and that student is willing to work for 5 months within an ongoing line of research there, that is very attractive to the foreign supervisor.
Oldenburg
Did you know that you could also do your specialization in Germany? After all, it is easier to get an AIOS position there. Would you like to learn more about the German hospital system during your studies before that? Then at various times during your studies there are opportunities to go to Oldenburg and the region of northwest Germany and there is a coordinator in the faculty who can support you in this.
From the academic year 2023/2024 there is a Buddy System launched between first year students in Groningen and Oldenburg, also you can do your bachelor project in year 3 in Oldenburg or in cooperation with Oldenburg, your foreign internship in M2, your Internship Science or your Oldest Coschap. These are all options you can do in Oldenburg or one of the other hospitals in the border region. Have you become interested and would you like more information? Then please contact Dr. Corinna Glasner (c.glasner@umcg.nl).
Practical information
The Student Portal contains a lot of information about internships abroad in general, but also more specifically about the M3 internships abroad. You will also find information about the consultation hours of Mrs. Bloemberg, and a general e-mail address where you can ask questions. Among other things, it clearly states what you need to arrange in advance before you go abroad (such as a language or tropical course) and what internship opportunities there are in the master's program. If you are thinking about doing your internships in M3 abroad, also check out this page. Here is information about grants and funds, such as the UMCG Fund, Erasmus or Marco Polo Fund (MPF), that you may be able to apply for!
