Description
Medical Oncology is the specialty concerning the care and medical treatment of patients with cancer. There are many different types of cancer and many different therapies including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Medical treatment can be part of combined multidisciplinary treatment, e.g. it can be given before or after surgery or in combination with radiotherapy. Medical oncologists work closely together with surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists, but also with other Departments such as Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Pharmacy, etc. In the UMCG all types of cancer are treated, and there is special expertise in treatment of rare cancers such as testicular cancer, sarcomas, neuro-endocrine tumors and head and neck cancer. At the Medical Oncology Department a lot of research is carried out in the laboratory as well as in the clinic to improve diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of cancer patients. There are many different possibilities for clinical and research projects, varying from one day observation to a PhD trajectory.

What we can offer students
Observation days
During which you can observe the work in the outpatient clinic, the inpatient clinic and experience how in a multidisciplinary team meeting the optimal treatment strategy for individual patients is determined (only for students who understand Dutch). During a day of observation in the laboratory you get insight in one of more of the ongoing  lines of research and the role you could play as a medical student.

Semi-doctor internship
You can do (part of) you semi-doctor internship at our Department. An individual schedule will be composed based on learning goals. Only for students who understand and speak Dutch.

Scientific internship
There are many research projects that are suitable for a scientific internship. If you are interested we will find out together which subject suits you the best.

Pilot project
There are always possibilities to do a short research project within an ongoing line of research to get to know our Department. This can be done through a JSM project or as an independent project.

PhD trajectory
At our Department there are often possibilities to do a PhD, either as an MD/PhD trajectory or during a period of 3-4 years after the internships. Please contact us to be informed about the opportunities!

Profiling projects
It is possible to do a profiling project within our department. This can be either a Medical Oncology project or a Palliative Medicine project (only for students who understand and speak Dutch).
