Description

General information:
The specialism Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis is engaged in diagnostics and treatment of a large variety of syndromes that primarily manifest themselves in the lungs. The large groups of syndromes within the lung diseases are Asthma, COPD, Lung Cancer and Infectious Diseases (Pneumonia, TB, CF, etc.). Pulmonologist diagnose and treat these syndromes to a large extent independently. Pulmonologists also perform many procedures such as bronchoscopy, ultrasound, placement of thoracic drains and making punctures, therapeutic interventions via the respiratory tract, non-invasive ventilation, pulmonary function tests and cycling ergometry. The lung center of the UMCG has a unique position within the Netherlands, it is the only hospital with a TBC department, it has a Center for Home Ventilation and a pulmonary rehabilitation department, is one of three hospitals where lung transplants are done and is the top reference center for bronchoscopic interventions. Besides this all, conducting internationally leading research is also done within the department.
