Description

General information:
In the sports medical center, orthopedics, rehabilitation, trauma surgery and sports medicine work together. The focus of sports medicine is chronic injuries and addressing physical inactivity, "exercise = medicine", in chronically ill patients. It employs four sports physicians and three physiotherapists, together with orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation physicians and surgeons. There are mostly conservative treatments, first in the context of injury clinics and performing sports medical examinations to assess fitness for (top)sports but also to assess the general condition and in this way find the best way to improve fitness and health.

Research is conducted in chronic injuries (especially tendon injuries and running injuries) and the effect of training and effort on chronic symptoms and limitations.

Offers for Students:
Because the department has an active role in the curriculum with coaching of M1 and M3 students there is no room for small internships for bachelor students. There are a number of semi-doctor places available and academic internships for M3. However, it is possible for students to be part of a research group.

Current projects at the Sports Medical Centre are several studies on prevention and treatment of tendinopathy and running injuries. The investigation of tendinopathy, for example, focuses on the efficacy of patella straps and shockwave therapy, which embraces both pain and the structure of the tendon with the aid of special ultrasound equipment. We also want to gain more insight into genetic factors and tendon problems in the elderly and chronically ill. The research on running injuries focuses on the relationship between running style and running injuries and interventions that can change the course style. The occurrence of injuries at novice runners using a large database is being looked at as well.
