Description

General information:
The speciality Nephrology encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, systemic  autoimmune diseases and renal replacement therapy including kidney transplantation, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

The presentation of kidney disease is very diverse, ranging from a virtually asymptomatic course with signs of renal insufficiency only being present in the clinical chemistry lab to acute renal failure in which the patient suddenly stops urinating. This large variation is due to the multiple functions of the kidney and the broad variety of pathophysiological processes that underlie the onset of kidney damage.

Possibilities for students:
Students can contact us for performing internships, for example, at the outpatient clinic (in the context of vocational preparation). Students can also be introduced in one of several research projects at our department. This could mean an introduction to the research laboratory along with an MD/PhD student of our department, but also the possibility to participate in ongoing clinical and experimental research projects. Finally, it is possible to perform your scientific internship in the field of Nephrology, which could possibly result in a position of JSM MD/PhD and a clinical M3-internship at our department. For students who are specifically interested in the field of transplantation, there is the possibility to perform your own tissue typing (HLA typing, with your own blood) at our Transplantation Immunology laboratory. For those who intend an extended stay in the field of renal transplantation, there is the possibility to actually attend a kidney transplantation!
