Description

Cardiology is the specialism that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases. The Cardiology department is, together with the department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Thorax Center of the UMCG. For example, a cardiologist treats patients with symptoms caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries, such as angina pectoris or a heart attack. The cardiologist also treats patients with heart failure, valvular heart disease, heart muscle disease, heart rhythm disorders and congenital heart defects. The specialism also focuses on risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and unhealthy lifestyles. A cardiologist diagnoses with various function tests such as an ECG, a bicycle test and echocardiography.

Offer for Students:
The employees of the department of cardiology at the UMCG do a lot of research, among others in the field of heart failure and atrial fibrillation. The department offers many opportunities for students to get small internships, research internships and scientific literature studies. The research is both experimental oriented (in the subsection experimental cardiology) as well as clinical.
