Prof. H.W.G.M. Boddeke
Prof. Dr. Boddeke is Professor of Medical Physiology / Neurophysiology at the Department of Neuroscience at the UMCG. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Amsterdam. From 1988 to 1996, he was laboratory head and group leader in Neuroimmunology at Sandoz in Basel, Switzerland. From 1996 to 1998, he was deputy head of the Department of Neurogenetics at Novartis Research in Basel, Switzerland. In 1998, he became professor of physiology at the Department of Medical Physiology at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) and in 2015 he was appointed vice-dean of Research at the UMCG.
Prof. Dr. G. Croiset
On 1 February 2018, Prof. Dr. Croiset was appointed Vice-Dean of Education and Training at the UMCG. Prior to this, she worked as director of the VUmc School of Medical Sciences. Prof. Croiset first studied biology at Utrecht University and then obtained her PhD in neuroscience. Prof. Croiset also studied medicine at Utrecht University. She stepped down as Vice-Dean in November 2023.
Prof. Dr. M. Joëls
Prof. Dr. Joëls obtained her PhD in Utrecht in 1984. She completed her doctoral research at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Between 1991 and 2009, she worked at the University of Amsterdam. In 2009, she was appointed professor of neuroscience in Utrecht and scientific director at the Brain Centre Rudolf Magnus. Since September 2016, she has been professor of Neurobiology of Environmental Factors. She has also been dean/member of the Executive Board of the UMCG.
Prof. Dr W.J. Niessen
Prof. Dr Niessen is a scientist in the field of machine learning and biomedical image analysis. He has been a professor at Erasmus MC, UMC Rotterdam and TU Delft. Since 2023, he has been Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and a member of the Executive Board of the UMCG. Prof. Niessen is the founder and Scientific Lead at Quantib, a company that uses deep learning technology in medical imaging.
Prof. Dr. L.F.M.H. De Leij
Prof. Dr. De Leij studied biology/biochemistry in Groningen and received his PhD there in 1979. In 1986, he became an assistant professor, in 1992 an associate professor, and in 1994 a full professor in Medical Biology. Prof. Dr. De Leij was head of the Medical Biology section from 1998 to 2010. From June 2005 to May 2015, he was Dean of Research at the UMCG, and from May 2009 to January 2025, he was Dean of the Groningen Graduate Schools.
Prof. C.G.M. Kallenberg
Prof. Dr. Kallenberg is currently professor emeritus of Internal Medicine, specialising in Clinical Immunology at the UMCG, but he is still very active in the medical field, including as chair of GIPS-M, the organisation that aims to guide motivated medical students in scientific internships at leading institutions abroad. The importance he attaches to a medical faculty association is evident from the fact that during his medical studies in Leiden, he served on the board of the M.F.L.S. (Leiden medical students' faculty association) for a year.
Prof. Dr. M.J.E. Mourits
Prof. Dr. Mourits studied Medicine at Radboud University Nijmegen and trained as a gynaecologist in Groningen. Prof. Dr. Mourits is head of the Gynaecological Oncology sub-department at the UMCG and head trainer in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the OOR-NO. Her research focuses on hereditary gynaecological cancer. She has been chair of the Central Training Committee at the UMCG and is a member of the Regional Disciplinary Board for Healthcare.
Drs. R.M. Bezema
Mr. Bezema was head of the UMCG Education Institute from 2012 to 2020. In this position, he was responsible for the organisation and quality assurance of the Medicine and Dentistry programmes, among other things. Cooperation with students is extensive and of great importance in the organisation of education, but certainly also in the quality assurance process. As chair of the Supervisory and Advisory Board of M.F.V. Panacea, he is always available for questions and advice.
Dr. E.J. Zonderland
Dr Zonderland has been studying medicine in Groningen since 2002. His exceptional performance on the horizontal bar at the 2012 Olympic Games earned him the title of Olympic gymnastics champion. In 2013, Mr Zonderland was named Dutch Sportsman of the Year and in the same year he was also appointed Honorary Member of M.F.V. Panacea.
Prof. Dr C. Wijmenga
Prof. Dr C. Wijmenga studied biology in Groningen and obtained her PhD at Leiden University. Prof. Dr Wijmenga is Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Groningen and the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). From 1 September 2019 to September 2023, she was Rector Magnificus of the University of Groningen, the first female Rector Magnificus since its foundation. In 2015, Wijmenga won the Spinoza Prize for her research into the genetic background of coeliac disease.
Prof. Dr. Ir. J.M.A. Scherpen
Prof. Dr. Ir. J.M.A. Scherpen studied Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente. She then worked at Delft University of Technology and in 2006 became Professor of Discrete Technology and Production Automation at the University of Groningen. Scherpen won the Prince Friso Engineering Award in 2023 and has been Rector Magnificus of the University of Groningen since September 2023.
Drs. R.J. van Ouwerkerk
Drs. R.J. van Ouwerkerk is Head of Academic Programmes and Medical Postgraduate Programmes at the UMCG.
Prof. Dr. M.J. Schuurmans
Prof. Dr. M.J. Schuurmans has worked as Chief Healthcare Organisation at the Dutch Healthcare Authority and as Director of Education at the UMC Utrecht. Prof. Dr. Schuurmans studied nursing sciences in Maastricht and was appointed professor of Nursing Science at UMC Utrecht. On 1 November 2023, she was appointed Vice-Dean of Education and Training at the UMCG.
